Anonymous asked: wow. shadow seems very.. broken. just read all of your para and just whoa. i feel her pain almsot. where is she now?

“Where’s Shadow?” Battery echoes, biting her lip.

Getting her revenge, probably getting herself killed. All because of me.

“I don’t know, Anon. And it’s none of my business, she can take care of herself.”

He slowly calmed down but as he watched her he felt horrible. Felt so stupid for freaking out like he did. She was not his mother. No where near her. She had only wanted to comfort him.

He reached up so slowly and held her wrist, holding it with such ease. Kai looked up at her with pleading eyes. “No. Please. I am well.” he pulled gently so that she may sit back down, he shuffled closer ad although every single pore in his body screamed at his he wrapped his arm around her awkwardly and, somewhat, hugged the girl. He stayed like that for a while. Feeling strange and…warm. Nothing bad happened.

He pulled back and apologized furiously “I should not have reacted the way I did.”

Battery let him pull her along, sitting and staying still as he gave his best attempt at human contact. His posture was tense and his arm in an uncomfortable for both him and her.

She sat back and looked at him with the most intensity that she dared without making him freak again. “It’s not your fault, ice-kid.” She softened her features and smiled. “I remember when I first moved here, I thought every shadow was a monster and sometimes when I woke up I couldn’t remember where I was for the longest time.” It was embarrassing, but the least shameful thing she’d done in front of Kai all day.

Why couldn’t he be like Wally? this warm person who could comfort someone. Who could make people feel good. Instead he worries people and makes them feel awkward and uncomfortable.

“But you are a warm person. I am…naturally cold” His gaze turned down, finding something on the floor to focus on. “I’m frightened all the time” Even his voice was far away, as if he wasn’t there. “I hate it. I hate feeling like someone is going to jump out at me all the time” His brown curls fall over his eyes now as his head drops “I wish to be comfortable in who I am.”

“Ice-kid….” she said, wishing she knew how to make someone feel better. When she started to question herself years before, what did she do? Ran away and became a demon killing machine. She wasn’t about to advise he do the same. “Cold is refreshing….I’m starting to feel a bit burnt out. It’s nice talking to you and I enjoy your company.”

“As for being yourself,” she said, snuggling back into her cushion-made crevice, “Draw. Do things you enjoy, and share them with people you like. You have opinions, so share them, speak up. Practice makes perfect.”

He watched her expression for a moment, confused by it. “I’m glad that you are grateful, Battery.”

He watched her looked around and was more confused, unaware of what she was doing.

The her hand touched him and he tensed. His whole body turning rigid, his teeth clenched together “P-Please” he almost whimpers “Please, I didn’t do anything wrong. D-don’t hurt me” he curled up then, edging away from her. Her touch didn’t feel threatening but his mother;s touches were often deceptive.

“Kai?!” she gasped. “Kaiden? Look at me,” she said desperately. “I’m not going to hurt you.” Her hand had snapped back reflexively and she put them up as if to show that she was unarmed.

For a horrible moment she pondered the possibility that he was somehow psychic, and that when she’d touched him he had seen what she had recently thought of, which was her….not-so-kind nature. She dismissed it quickly though, the fear in his eyes was irrational and a reaction.

She scooted back to her extreme end of the couch, hands still up. “I’m sorry, Kaiden, I didn’t mean it,” she promised calmly. “Nobody here is going to hurt you, and if they tried, I wouldn’t let them.” She sank down in her seat now, hoping to come off as harmless.

He heard the voice but did not understand the words, suddenly lost in his younger self. He would do anything to get away from his mother. He would run, wriggle, kick and scream to no avail. If he struggled it made it worse.

His eyes slowly came back into focus, she’d moved to the far end of the sofa and her hands were up. She wasn’t going to hurt him. Stupid. Stupid Kaiden.

He stopped, uncurling slowly and panting, his breath heavy and ragged. Eyes wild and dark as he tried to calm himself.

“N-no need to ap-pologize” he manged, waiting for his breathing to return to normal.

“I. I’m so sorry, Battery.” He turned his head to look at her, his features softening somewhat. “I did not mean to worry you.”

“Shhhh,” she soothed, smiling a little but leaving her hands up. “I am sorry, it was my bad.” He’s not Wally, you can’t just tackle him with a hug and expect him to laugh. He’s been through hell, obviously, look at him Batt!

“I didn’t mean to startle you,” she said apologetically. “Can I get you something?” she asked, finally putting her hands down and safely in her lap. “Something to drink? Eat? Anything you wanna watch on TV?” she asked, standing up slowly.

She raised an eyebrow at his posture, sniffling slightly to make her look completely ridiculous. If that was how he wanted to sit though, she guessed she’d let it go. He didn’t seem to know how to be comfortable, whether they were sitting on cushions or cold tiles.

Reaching out gingerly, she took the cherub, smiling down to it while trying not to cover it in tears. “Of course it’ll do,” she said, looking back up to the kind boy. She didn’t know why she kept calling him a boy, he was older than she was. But there was something just so….innocent about him.

Shaking her head, she looked down, embarrassed that she was crying….again. “I’m just so happy. You and Wally have been so nice to me. You haven’t judged me at all and just—” she looked away, choking up.

He didn’t know quite what to do with himself. Does he take his shoes off? does he sit cross legged on the sofa? does he do this? do that? He didn’t quite know what was permitted and what was not.

He smiled as she took the cherub. He was especially happy he was getting better at this ‘gift’ of his, able to control it just the way he needed to..

He lifted a hand gingerly and wiped away a tear, deciding he should at least try and brighten the mood. He gave her a wide smile, his pearly white teeth on show. “I am not one to judge, Battery. Especially not of a girl so kind”

The word ‘kind’ sort of rolled around in her mind. Like a ball in a pinball machine, bouncing from here to there. Of course, it was an innocent enough term and she tried to be nice to people. There was also the side of her that he didn’t know, the side of her that killed people and hunted creatures. “I’m grateful to it, though.” She smiled.

Battery couldn’t take it anymore and finally looked around her living room. Maybe there was something making him so on edge? Like, maybe she’d left a bottle of scotch on her entertainment center? Except that she was pregnant and not drinking….

She reached out and put a hand on his thigh slowly, as if trying to get close enough to pet a deer. “Hon, relax. Is there something the matter?”

He watched her expression for a moment, confused by it. “I’m glad that you are grateful, Battery.”
